The Beach: A Seagull Battle Royale Game
Role: Marketing & Game Artist
Character Concepts & Marketing
From 2019 -2020, I worked with Afterschool Studios as the artist for a seagull battle royale game. Up to 50 players would scramble as birds on a beach, outrunning chaotic ocean waves, sabotaging each other with environmental obstacles, and eating up slices of bread for points. While the project is on hold until further notice, the prototype’s itch.io page provides more information about the gameplay.
After looking at hundreds of seagull photos, I focused on conveying various combinations of shape language and silhouettes.
ENVIRONMENT DESIGN
The beach ‘battlefield’ needed to fit the playful aesthetic of the game. It also needed to have enough floor space to fit up to 50 players. Pulling reference from Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network shows, I also tested with construction paper to give the sand a grittier texture.
The final design for the first battle royale map.
prop design
Driftwood and empty bottles litter the beach and get in the way of running seagulls. Leftover pieces of bread reward the fastest scavengers with extra points.
